IGF, or Istanbul Genclik Festivali (Istanbul Youth Festival), is an annual festival focusing on young people. Festival was at Yenikapi sea coast, which covers approximately 50,000 square meters of outdoor and 9,000 square meters of indoor area. Therefore navigation was the key element on enormous festival area. We created a zone system, so every zone has a different color and a name by its color. And it could be understood which zone are you, by flags, furnitures’ and installations’ colors or sign towers. Concept for this festival was defined as upcycle and nature. So we mainly used waste materials and plants.
Municipality and its participations support festival, therefore we could collaborate with them. We used waste infrastructure elements such as concrete pipes from the concrete producer of municipality.
Two types of concrete pipes are used to create installations and furnitures, first one weighs 36 tonnes and has 360 centimeter of inner diameter. The other one weighs 7 tonnes and has 140 centimeters of inner diameter. We used these concrete pipes as base element and then we attached them different wooden structures to give them new functions.
Water stations are placed to three different zones on the festival area to provide water to participants. Each one consists of wave shaped concrete flower pots and their reinforcements. These structure is covered with various plants such as ivy. Different types of plants are provided us to use on other installations from municipality’s plant provider participation. We built green wall consist of scaffolding system, pines and ivy. This wall has welcomed guests at main entrance. Green had continued on interiors with our reinforcement installations. On interior, we covered the ceiling with fabrics attached to net. This waves had continued on outside of the building too.
